**Alipay Setup (10 minutes, do it at home):**
1. Download Alipay from App Store / Google Play
2. Sign up with your phone number
3. Go to **Me β Bank Cards β Add Card**
4. Add your Visa/Mastercard β Alipay now supports 99% of foreign cards
5. **IMPORTANT:** Complete identity verification (passport scan)
6. Test with a 1 RMB transfer to a friend
**The 3% Rule:**
- Single transactions over 200 RMB: **3% fee** on foreign cards
- Under 200 RMB: **Free** (as of 2026)
- Pro tip: Split large payments or link a Chinese bank card if you can
**WeChat Pay:**

4. **Offline maps**: Download city maps before you go out

π« 5. Booking Trains, Flights & Attractions
**Trains:**
- Book via **Trip.com** (English), fees are minimal
- **12306.cn** (official) now has an English version β but Trip.com is easier
- Book 15 days ahead for popular routes (Beijing-Shanghai, Chengdu-Chongqing)
- Train types: **G** = High-speed (300km/h), **D** = Fast (250km/h), **K** = Regular (slow)
**Attractions:**
- **Forbidden City**: Book 7 days in advance via WeChat mini-program
- **National Museum**: Free but requires reservation β book 3 days ahead
- **Most other sites**: Book day-of or day-before, Trip.com can handle many
**Flights:**
- Domestic flights: Trip.com or airline direct (China Southern, Air China, China Eastern)
- Budget airlines: Spring Airlines β cheap but no luggage included
