🏡 Ancient Water Towns & Mountains: Suzhou → Huangshan → Hangzhou

📅 July 2026 | 📍 Culture lovers & photographers | ⏱️ 5 Days / 4 Nights

There’s a version of China that exists in ink paintings — misty mountains, ancient gardens, stone bridges over canals. This trip is about finding that China. Suzhou’s gardens are a microcosm of human craft, Huangshan’s granite peaks are nature’s masterpiece, and Hangzhou’s West Lake ties it all together with tea and poetry.

I designed this for travelers who want depth over breadth. Three cities, each with a completely different character, all connected by the high-speed rail network.

📅 Itinerary

Day 1: Suzhou — Gardens, Canals & Silk

Zhouzhuang water town

Theme: The art of Chinese garden design

Humble Administrator’s Garden (拙政园)

The king of Chinese gardens. Built in 1509 by a retired government minister, it covers 5.2 hectares of carefully composed landscapes — pavilions, bridges, rockeries, lotus ponds, and borrowed views that make the garden feel infinite.

The genius is in the details: every window frames a different scene, every path reveals a new perspective. You’re not walking through a garden — you’re walking through a living painting.

  • 📍 Address: 178 Northeast Street, Gusu District
  • 🚇 Metro Line 4, Beisi Ta Station
  • ⏰ 7:30 AM – 5:30 PM
  • ¥80 / ~$11 (peak season)

Lunch: Tong De Xing (同得兴) for Suzhou noodles — the pork rib noodle soup is legendary. ¥25–35 / ~$3.50–5.

Pingjiang Road (平江路)

An 800-year-old canal-side street. Walk south along the water, crossing stone bridges, peeking into traditional houses. Kunqu opera occasionally drifts from teahouses. This is the Suzhou that hasn’t changed in centuries.

  • 💰 Free
  • 🕐 1–2 hours of wandering

Suzhou Museum

Right next to the Humble Administrator’s Garden. Designed by I.M. Pei (who grew up in Suzhou) — the building itself is a masterpiece. Modern geometry meets traditional Chinese architecture. Free admission.

  • ⏰ 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM (closed Mondays)
  • 💰 Free

Tiger Hill (虎丘)

“The most famous hill in the Wu region.” The leaning Cloud Rock Pagoda has been tilting for 400 years — China’s Pisa. The Sword Pool legend hides a king’s treasure.

  • 💰 ¥60 / ~$8.30

🛏️ Stay near: Pingjiang Road area — atmospheric, walkable

Day 2: Suzhou → Huangshan — Into the Clouds

Nanjing Confucius Temple at night

Theme: From gardens to granite peaks

Morning: Train to Huangshan

Duration~3 hours
Price¥280 / ~$39

Huangshan (Yellow Mountains)

UNESCO World Heritage Site and the most painted mountain in Chinese art. Granite peaks shrouded in clouds, ancient pine trees clinging to cliffs, hot springs steaming in valleys. This is where the “shanshui” (mountain-water) painting tradition was born.

Getting to the top:

  • Cable car (recommended): Yungu Station, ¥90 / ~$12 one way. Takes 10 minutes vs. 3+ hours hiking

  • Hiking: 7.5km trail, 3–4 hours. Strenuous but rewarding

  • 📍 Huangshan City, Anhui Province

  • ⏰ 6:00 AM – 4:00 PM (cable car hours)

  • ¥190 / ~$26 (park entry) + ¥90 / ~$12 (cable car)

  • 🕐 Full day

Accommodation option: Stay overnight on the mountain at Xihai Hotel (西海饭店) or Beihai Hotel (北海饭店). Waking up to sunrise above the clouds is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Book months in advance — ¥800–1500 / ~$110–207 per night.

Key Viewpoints

  1. Beginning-to-Believe Peak (始信峰) — The classic Huangshan view. Pines growing from granite, clouds rolling through valleys
  2. Bright Summit (光明顶) — The highest point (1,860m). 360° panoramic views
  3. West Sea Grand Canyon (西海大峡谷) — A glass-bottomed walkway suspended between cliffs. Terrifying and spectacular

🛏️ Stay on the mountain (if budget allows) or in Huangshan City/Tunxi

Day 3: Huangshan — Sunrise & Ancient Village

Hongcun village near Huangshan

Theme: Dawn at 1,800m, afternoon in a 400-year-old village

Sunrise at Huangshan

If you stayed on the mountain, wake at 5:00 AM and head to Bright Summit or Foxian Monkey Watching the Sea (猴子观海). The sunrise over the granite peaks, with a sea of clouds filling the valleys below, is one of the most spectacular natural displays in China.

If you didn’t stay on the mountain, take the first cable car up (6:00 AM) and hike to a sunrise viewpoint.

Xidi Ancient Village (西递)

After descending the mountain, drive or bus 1 hour to Xidi — a UNESCO-listed village from the Ming Dynasty. White-washed Hui-style houses with dark tile roofs, carved stone facades, and narrow alleys. It’s like stepping into a Tang dynasty painting.

  • 📍 Yi County, Huangshan City
  • ¥104 / ~$14.40
  • 🕐 2–3 hours

Lunch: Hui cuisine is different from Cantonese or Sichuan. Try stinky tofu (臭豆腐, smellier than it tastes), mao tofu (毛豆腐, fuzzy fermented tofu — sounds weird, tastes amazing), and Hui-style braised pork (毛峰熏肉).

Hongcun Ancient Village (宏村)

Another UNESCO village, 20 minutes from Xidi. This one has a half-moon pond and canals running through the village — the “Chinese water village” aesthetic. Popular with art students who come to sketch the traditional architecture.

  • ¥104 / ~$14.40
  • 🕐 2 hours

🛏️ Stay near: Huangshan City (Tunxi) — convenient for transport

Day 4: Huangshan → Hangzhou — Tea & Tranquility

Wuxi ancient canal

Songcheng, Hangzhou

Theme: From mountains to the lake

Morning: Train to Hangzhou

West Lake (西湖)

Rent a bike and ride the 15km loop. The lake is beautiful from every angle, but the Su Causeway (苏堤) at dawn is special — willow trees lining both sides, morning mist hovering over the water, barely another person in sight.

Highlights:

  • Broken Bridge (断桥) — The most famous bridge in Chinese literature

  • Three Pools Mirroring the Moon (三潭印月) — Three stone pagodas in the middle of the lake

  • Leifeng Pagoda (雷峰塔) — Rebuilt in 2002, but the views from the top are worth the ¥40

  • 💰 Free (pagoda ¥40 / ~$5.50)

  • 🕐 3–4 hours cycling

Lunch: Louwailou Restaurant (楼外楼), operating since 1848. Their Dongpo Pork (东坡肉) is the benchmark — braised pork belly in soy sauce, melt-in-your-mouth tender. ¥40–60 / ~$5.50–8.

Longjing Tea Village (龙井村)

After the lake, ride or Didi to Longjing village. Sit at a family-run tea house, taste fresh Dragon Well tea, watch the tea terraces roll down the hillsides.

Tip: Buy tea from farmers, not shops. ¥100–300 / ~$14–41 per 50g for first flush.

🛏️ Stay near: West Lake area — Hefang Street or Nanshan Road

Day 5: Hangzhou — Temples, Markets & Departure

Theme: Spiritual morning, sensory evening

Lingyin Temple (灵隐寺)

One of the largest Buddhist temples in China, founded in 328 AD. The surrounding forest is filled with stone Buddhas carved into cliff faces dating back to the Song Dynasty.

  • ⏰ 7:00 AM – 5:30 PM
  • ¥75 / ~$10.40 (includes Fei Lai Feng)

Hefang Street (河坊街)

Evening market with food stalls, traditional shops, and craft vendors. Try ding shi bing (定胜饼, victory cakes) — ¥5 each.

Longjing Tea Purchase

Before you leave, buy some Dragon Well tea as a souvenir. The farmers near Longjing village sell directly — taste first, buy after. ¥100–300 / ~$14–41 per 50g.

Departure

Hangzhou Xiaoshan Airport has flights to most Chinese cities and international destinations. Or take the high-speed rail to Shanghai (45 minutes) for Pudong/Hongqiao airports.

💡 Practical Tips

  1. Huangshan overnight — If budget allows, staying on the mountain is worth every yuan. Sunrise + sunset + night stars — unforgettable.
  2. Book Huangshan cable car early — Lines can be 1–2 hours long during peak season. First cable car at 6:00 AM.
  3. Suzhou gardens close on Mondays — Plan Day 1 for a non-Monday.
  4. Xidi vs. Hongcun — Xidi is more architecturally refined; Hongcun is more photogenic with the water. Visit both if you have time.
  5. West Lake cycling — Rent bikes from shared bike apps (Hellobike, Meituan). ¥1.5 per 30 minutes.
  6. Pack for Huangshan — Even in summer, the summit can be 10°C cooler than the base. Bring a warm layer.
  7. Photography — Huangshan at dawn, West Lake at dusk, Suzhou gardens in the rain. These are the magic moments.
