📌 Read Before You Go

Before coming to Shanghai, you only need to know one thing: Don’t join a tour group, don’t go to Nanjing Road, don’t eat at tourist attractions.

All the cool stuff in Shanghai is tucked away in the little plane-tree-lined streets. This itinerary was planned by a local friend of mine, and I walked it for three days without a single dud.

Use the metro for transport. Download Gaode Maps (Amap) —that’s all you need. Shanghai has the densest metro network in China, making everywhere accessible.

鉁?Day 1锝淲ukang Road →?Anfu Road →?Xintiandi

Arrive in Shanghai in the afternoon. Take Metro Line 10/11 to Jiaotong University Station directly.

No sightseeing on Day 1. Just walk the streets.

Wukang Road

Wukang Road scene Wukang Road’s plane trees and old villas —every shot is a masterpiece

Start at the Wukang Building and walk south. This road is SO photogenic —every corner is a scene.

Make sure to photograph the Wukang Building —that famous viral corner. Go around 3-4 PM for the best light. Stand at the northeast corner of the intersection to get both the building and the plane trees in frame.

⚠️ On holidays, the Wukang intersection is completely packed. Come on a weekday or arrive before 9 AM.

Walk from Wukang Road to Anfu Road (about 15 minutes). The whole way is lined with caf茅s and concept stores. Just wander.

Anfu Road

Anfu Road is where Shanghai’s best-dressed people shop. It’s short, but every shop is worth stepping into.

Lunch recommendation: % Arabica (trendy coffee) or RAC Bar (brunch at its finest). Both are on Anfu Road, a 2-minute walk apart.

Xintiandi

In the evening, take the metro or taxi to Xintiandi. Everything here —food, drink, shopping —is solid. Hard to go wrong.

I’d recommend the Thai place next to % Arabica (around 楼120 per person), or Old Jackie's (鑰佸悏澹? for Shanghainese food (about 楼150 per person, reservation required).

Xintiandi night scene Xintiandi’s shikumen architecture and neon lights —a must for Shanghai nightlife

Day 1 Accommodation: Stay near Xintiandi or Middle Huaihai Road —convenient for Day 2’s French Concession exploration.

鉁?Day 2锝淔rench Concession City Walk →?Yu Garden →?The Bund

Today is a walking day —wear comfortable shoes.

French Concession City Walk

Start from Xintiandi and walk this route: Fuxing Road →?South Maoming Road →?Sinan Road →?Fuxing Park.

This is Shanghai’s most pleasant walking route. French plane trees and old villas line both sides —quiet, atmospheric, perfect.

Along the way you’ll pass:

  • Sinan Mansions: a cluster of old villas, incredibly photogenic
  • Fuxing Park: Shanghai’s oldest French-style park —sit down and relax
  • Zhou Enlai Residence: free entry

Yu Garden (Afternoon)

Metro Line 10 to Yuyuan Station.

Yu Garden itself is a classic Jiangnan garden. 楼40 admission, worth going in. But the main attraction nearby is the Chenghuang Temple Food Street —not for eating, but for soaking up the lively atmosphere.

💡 Don’t eat inside Chenghuang Temple —overpriced and mediocre. For authentic food, head to Laoximen or Changli Road.

Yu Garden Yu Garden’s Nine-Turn Bridge —worth seeing both day and night

The Bund (Evening)

Metro Line 2 to East Nanjing Road Station, then a 10-minute walk to the Bund.

The Bund is a MUST at night. It’s scorching hot during the day and jam-packed in the evening, but that half-hour around sunset is pure gold.

Walk along the riverside and watch the lights of Lujiazui flicker on one by one. The Oriental Pearl, Shanghai Tower, and SWFC —all three skyscrapers across the river.

The Bund night view The Bund’s heritage architecture and Lujiazui’s skyline across the river —Shanghai’s classic image

⚠️ Don’t try to catch a taxi here. The traffic will drive you crazy. Take the metro.

Day 2 Accommodation: Switch to a hotel near the Bund if your budget allows —a room with a river view is something else.

鉁?Day 3锝淒isney (Optional) / Zhujiajiao Water Town / Wrap-up

Two choices for Day 3, depending on your energy and interest:

Option A: Disneyland (Full Day)

If you’re going to Disney, this whole day belongs to it. Take Metro Line 11 straight there. Leave at 7:30 AM.

Tickets: 楼475 (weekdays) / 楼599 (weekends). Buy in advance on the app.

Disney Castle Disney Castle —every girl’s dream, honestly

Option B: Zhujiajiao Water Town (Half Day)

If Disney isn’t your thing, head to Zhujiajiao. Metro Line 17 direct, 1 hour away.

It’s an authentic water town —way fewer tourists than Wuzhen, much less commercialized. Take a boat ride, eat zongzi (rice dumplings), wander the old streets.

Zhujiajiao Zhujiajiao’s Fangsheng Bridge —a quiet corner of Jiangnan water town

In the afternoon, stop by Nanjing Road to pick up some souvenirs. Then pack up and head to the airport or train station.

🍜 No-Trap Food List

Shanghai food, in two words: refined and precise. Small portions, beautiful presentation, careful preparation.

💡 Eating out in Shanghai is generally pricier than other Chinese cities, but the quality is always there.

🚇 Transport Guide

Airports: Pudong (mostly international) / Hongqiao (mostly domestic)

  • Pudong to city: Maglev (8 min to Longyang Road, 楼50) + metro
  • Hongqiao to city: Metro Lines 2/10 direct

  • Metro: covers all attractions, 楼3-7 per ride

⚠️ Trap-Avoidance Guide

  1. Don’t go to Nanjing Road —pedestrian streets look the same in every Chinese city, waste of time
  2. Don’t eat at tourist attractions —Chenghuang Temple and Bund-area restaurants are overpriced and mediocre
  3. Don’t take a taxi to the Bund —traffic will make you question your life choices
  4. Don’t visit in summer —July-August hits 40掳C; winter is actually more comfortable
  5. Don’t join a tour group —Shanghai is for slow wandering. A rushed tour bus experience misses everything

💡 One last thing: Shanghai is a city you need to slow down for. Don’t rush from one attraction to the next. Just walk along the streets, stop for a coffee under the plane trees, look at the old villas. That’s the right way to experience Shanghai.
