Macau is not Hong Kong’s little brother. That’s the first thing to understand.
Two hours west across the Pearl River Delta, this former Portuguese colony (1557-1999) developed a personality entirely its own. The Portuguese stayed for 442 years?longer than they ruled Brazil?and they left behind a city that feels like Lisbon with a Cantonese accent. Egg tarts next to congee shops. Baroque churches above temples to the sea goddess Mazu. Cobblestone streets that lead to gambling palaces.
Walk the thin line between these two worlds, and you’ll find one of Asia’s most underrated cities.
Day 1: The Portuguese Quarter
Morning: Ruins of St. Paul’s & Senado Square
The Ruins of St. Paul’s are Macau’s defining image?a granite facade of a 17th-century Jesuit church, standing alone on a hilltop. The church was destroyed by fire in 1835; only the front wall survived. For the past 190 years, it’s been the symbol of Macau’s colonial soul.
Arrive at 8 AM, before the tour groups flood in. Stand at the bottom of the 68 stone steps and look up. The facade is carved in layersJesuit saints at the top, Chinese lion and chrysanthemum motifs at the bottom. A collision of cultures in stone.
Behind the ruins, climb the hill to the Museum of Macau (楼15, 10 AM-6 PM), which tells the city’s story from fishing village to gambling capital. The viewing platform offers a panorama of the old city?pink and yellow colonial buildings, tiled roofs, and in the distance, the casinos of Taipa.
From St. Paul’s, walk downhill on cobblestone streets past bakeries selling pork chop buns (楼25) to Senado Square (. This is Macau’s living room?a wave-patterned mosaic plaza surrounded by pastel-coloured neo-classical buildings. The General Post Office, the Holy House of Mercy, and the Leal Senado building (now the Municipal Affairs Bureau) all date from the 19th century.

?Note on the Name: “Macau” comes from “A-Ma Gau” (Cantonese for “Bay of the Goddess A-Ma”). The Portuguese arrived in 1557, heard “Ma Gau,” and transcribed it as “Macau.” The goddess in question is Mazu, protector of fishermen. Her temple is still there.
Late Morning: A-Ma Temple (?
Built in 1488, the A-Ma Temple predates the Portuguese presence in Macau. It’s a complex of pavilions, prayer halls, and courtyards climbing up a rocky hillside at the southern tip of the peninsula. Fishermen have been coming here for 500 years to light incense before heading to sea.
The temple’s location, at the mouth of the Inner Harbour, is strategic?it’s the first thing arriving sailors would see. When the Portuguese landed here in the 1550s, they asked locals the name of the place. “Ma Gau,” they answered?the bay of the goddess.

Afternoon: Taipa Village & the Casinos
Cross the bridge to Taipa Island (about 15 min by taxi). Taipa Village is the settlement that hasn’t been swallowed by casinos yet?narrow streets, Portuguese-style houses painted in yellow and green, and the best food in Macau.

The Casinos
You can’t write about Macau without mentioning the casinos. They dominate the skyline and the economyMacau’s gambling revenue is 7 times that of Las Vegas.
The Venice Macau is worth visiting even if you don’t gamble. A faithful recreation of St. Mark’s Square, complete with canals and gondolas
(楼120 for a ride). The ceiling is a painted sky that cycles from dawn to dusk every 30 minutes.

The Grand Lisboa is the iconic lotus-shaped casino on the peninsula. Locals will tell you it was built with feng shui: the lotus shape absorbs luck, the neon blades on top “cut” competitors’ energy.
Day 2: Fortresses, Gardens & Macau’s Surprising Soul
Morning: Monte Fort
& Guia Fortress
The Jesuits built the Monte Fort (? in 1617 to protect their church (the one that later became St. Paul’s ruins). The cannons still point outward?toward the water, not the city. They never fired a single shot in anger. The fort’s location offers one of the best views of Macau’s skyline?colonial cupolas and neon casino towers in the same frame.
Walk through the park to the foot of Guia Hill. A cable car (楼5, 2 min) takes you to Guia Fortress and Lighthouse?the oldest Western lighthouse on the China coast (1865).
The lighthouse is still operational. The fort contains tunnels built by the British in the 1930s (used as Japanese headquarters during WWII). The chapel inside has frescoes that blend Christian and Chinese motifs.

Late Morning: Macau Tower

If you’re brave: the Macau Tower (338m) offers the world’s highest commercial bungee jump?233 metres of free fall. If you’re normal: the observation deck on the 58th floor gives a 360掳 view of the Macau Peninsula, Taipa, and across the water to mainland China.

Afternoon: Coloane Village
& Hac Sa Beach
Take bus 25 from the peninsula to Coloane, Macau’s southernmost island. Coloane feels completely different from the rest of Macau?quiet, green, with Portuguese-era villas and the best seafood in the city.
Hac Sa Beach is named for its black sand (the colour comes from weathered magnetite). It’s not Thailand, but it’s a pleasant spot to sit with a book and watch Chinese tourists take selfies.
Lunch: Fernando’s Restaurant (, since 1989). Portuguese-style grilled chicken, fried squid, and cold beer. 楼150-200 per person.

Evening: Fisherman’s Wharf
A waterfront complex designed as a theme park of world architectureRoman Colosseum (fake), Dutch windmills (fake), Tang dynasty buildings (also fake). It’s kitsch. It’s terrible. I kind of love it. Good for an evening stroll and dinner by the water.

The currency is the Macanese pataca (MOP), but Hong Kong dollars are accepted everywhere at 1:1. Chinese yuan is also accepted but at worse rates.

If you’re staying in Hong Kong, Macau makes an excellent day trip. Take the 7 AM TurboJet from Sheung Wan, arrive by 8 AM, explore until 5 PM, and ferry back. You’ll see all the major sights.
?Epilogue: Macau is frequently dismissed as “just a gambling town.” That’s like dismissing Rome as “just a Catholic town.” The casinos are impossible to ignore, but they’re the most recent layer of a city that’s been absorbing and remaking foreign influences for nearly five centuries. Walk the streets of Coloane, eat an egg tart at Lord Stow’s, sit in Senado Square at sunset, and you’ll see the city the gamblers don’t. It’s still there.
