Jiuzhaigou National Park — A Complete FAQ Guide

July 2026 | Nature lovers / Photographers / Families | 2-3 Days

Jiuzhaigou, which translates to “Nine Village Valley,” is one of those places that makes you question reality. The water is turquoise blue. Not a little bit turquoise?impossibly blue, like someone poured industrial dye into a series of alpine lakes.

It sits in northern Sichuan, at the edge of the Tibetan Plateau. Nine Tibetan villages dot the valley, 2,000 to 4,500 metres altitude. The park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

No embellishment needed. Just facts.

What You Need to Know (Quick Answers)

How many days do I need?

2 days minimum. 3 if you’re a serious photographer.

The park is Y-shaped

Bipeng Gou valley with snow-capped mountain scenery , covering 720 km? A single day lets you see the highlights (which are spectacular), but you’ll be rushing. Two days gives you time to hike some trails away from the shuttle bus stops.

When is the best time to visit?

| Season | What You Get | Verdict |

|--------|-------------|---------|

| October (mid-late) | Autumn colours. Red, yellow, gold leaves + turquoise water. Peak perfection |?UNBEATABLE |

| September | Still green, but fewer crowds |?|

| April-May | Spring blossoms, snow on peaks, lower water level |?|

| June-August | Green, busy, afternoon rain |?|

| November-March | Snow, some trails closed,?00 cheaper entry |Only if you like winter |

Absolute rule: Go mid-to-late October. I know it’s peak season. I know the park gets 40,000 visitors a day. It’s still worth it.

How much does it cost?

| Item | Peak Season (Apr-Nov) | Off-peak (Dec-Mar) |

|------|----------------------|--------------------|

| Entry ticket |?69 ($23) |?0 ($11) |

| Shuttle bus (mandatory) |?0 ($12) |?0 ($11) |

| Total | ?59 (~$35) | ?60 (~$22) |

顔?How do I get there?

There’s no high-speed train (yet?one is being built). Your options:

1. Fly (recommended)

Fly into Jiuzhai Huanglong Airport?1 hour from Chengdu. The airport sits at 3,400m. The flight takes 50 minutes. Then 2-hour bus to the park entrance.

2. Bus (cheap but painful)

8 hours from Chengdu.?50. Windy mountain roads. You’ll be carsick.

3. Drive (experienced drivers only)

7 hours. The road is steep, winding, and often under construction. Not recommended for first-time China drivers.

### The Ones You Cannot Miss

#### Nuorilang Waterfall (鈺咁伌)

The widest high-elevation waterfall in China (320m wide, 24m drop). It's at the central junction?you'll pass it multiple times. Go at 10 AM when the light hits the mist just right and you'll see rainbows.

#### Five Flower Lake (霉?

![Jiuzhaigou colorful turquoise lake with forest](/images/jiuzhaigou/jiuzhaigou_colorful_lake_turquoise_water_forest_001.webp)

This is *the* Jiuzhaigou photo. The water is so clear you can see submerged tree trunks 20 metres down, covered in calcium carbonate deposits that look like coral. The lake's colour changes through the day?teal at dawn, emerald at noon, sapphire in late afternoon.

**Photo spot:** Walk to the boardwalk on the east side. The tour groups all take photos from the west. Your photos will be better.

#### Five Color Pond (效?

![Jiuzhaigou colorful pool with crystal clear water](/images/jiuzhaigou/jiuzhaigou_waterfall_forest_scenic_park_nature_003.webp)

The smallest lake in the park but the most intensely coloured. In autumn, with red and yellow leaves reflected on the turquoise surface, it's almost too beautiful to be real. Early morning is best, before the wind creates ripples.

####Long Lake (鈧?

![Daocheng Yading snow peak](/images/jiuzhaigou/jiuzhaigou_daocheng_yading_snow_peak_meadow_006.webp)

The highest and deepest lake in the park (4,300m elevation, 80m deep). Surrounded by snow-capped peaks. The path from the shuttle stop is wheelchair accessible. Take the mandatory photo, then walk 10 minutes along the ridge for the *real* photo.

#### Pearl Shoal (顭?

A wide, shallow cascade over a calcareous tufa bed. The water looks like thousands of pearls rolling downhill. This is where the 1986 version of *Journey to the West* was filmed (Chinese viewers will recognise it instantly).

## Hiking Trails (Away from the Crowds)

Most visitors stay within 50 metres of the shuttle stops. Here's where to go for peace:

| Trail | Distance | Time | Crowds |

|-------|----------|------|--------|

| **Shuzheng Valley Walkway** | 4.5 km | 1.5h | Low |

| **Panda Lake to Five Flower Lake boardwalk** | 2 km | 40 min | Medium |

| **Primeval Forest Trail** (螞) | 3 km loop | 1.5h | Low |

| **Reed Lake Walkway** (霉? | 3 km | 45 min | Very Low |

The Shuzheng walkway is my favourite. Most shuttle buses skip it. You'll have the lakes, waterfalls, and Tibetan villages almost to yourself.

## Where to Stay

**Stay in Zhangzha Town (锟?**?the tourist town right at the park gate.

| Type | Price/Night | Examples |

| Mid-range hotel |?00-600 | InterContinental Resort (same company, the real one) |

| Splurge |?00-1,500 | Rizhao International Hotel |

**Pro tip:** Book accommodation that includes breakfast. You want to be at the park gate by 7:30 AM, and most restaurants don't open before 8.

##What Nobody Tells You

1. **Altitude sickness is real.** The park ranges from 2,000m to 4,500m. On Day 1, you'll feel it?shortness of breath, mild headache. Take it slow. Don't drink alcohol.

2. **The queues are real too.** At peak October, expect 30-60 min queues for shuttle buses at the entrance. Go at 7 AM.

3. **Don't feed the birds or monkeys.** They're aggressive. I saw a monkey snatch a GoPro from someone's hand.

4. **The parking lot at the entrance is a scam magnet.** Ignore anyone offering "skip the queue" tickets. Only buy at the official ticket window.

5. **The park closes early.** Last entry 2 PM. Last shuttle leaves 5 PM. You do not want to miss the last shuttle.

6. **Bring toilet paper.** Public toilets in the park don't supply it.

7. **Some trails close in winter.** Check before you book.

## Staying Connected

Mobile signal in the park is patchy (mountain valleys block towers). Do your navigation research the night before.

- **Airalo eSIM**?[get it here](https://airalo.tpfl.space/zh/XRGTKJEQ)Chengdu airport pickup, works in Zhangzha town

- **365VPN**?[install at home](https://www.365vpn.cc?aff=Anquin)?the park WiFi blocks foreign social media

*Jiuzhaigou is fragile. The park has been closed multiple times for restoration after earthquakes and landslides (most recently in 2017). Every visitor is a small burden on the ecosystem. Stay on the boardwalks, don't touch the water, and take nothing but photos. The less we leave behind, the longer it'll stay this beautiful.*?
