Huangshan (Yellow Mountain): A 2-Day Hiking Itinerary

July 2026 | Hikers, photographers, nature lovers | 2 Days

I’ll be straight with youHuangshan (Yellow Mountain) is the most famous mountain in China. The ink-wash paintings you’ve seen in scrolls? They’re drawn from this place. Pine trees growing out of granite cracks, seas of clouds below your feet, sunrise that makes you believe in something.

It’s also steep as hell. Here’s how to do it right.

Day 1: Up the Mountain & West Sea Grand Canyon

Getting There

Take the high-speed train from Shanghai (2.5h, ~180 RMB) or Hangzhou (1.5h, ~120 RMB) to Huangshan North Station. From there, a bus to the mountain’s Cloud Valley Temple entrance (~30 RMB, 50 min).

Route: Cloud Valley -> Start Peak -> West Sea

Two routes up. Cloud Valley Cable Car (~80 RMB) or walking up. Let me save you the trouble: take the cable car. The walk up takes 3 hours of nothing but stone steps and your own heavy breathing. The cable car gives you 10 minutes of genuine jaw-dropping views.

Once at the top, drop your bag at the hotel (yes, you should stay overnight on the mountain — more on that below) and head for Start Peak. This is where you’ll see the iconic Welcoming Pine (顓? It’s the one in every photo. It’s 800 years old.

Lunch: The food on the mountain is ~50 RMB

Jiuhua Mountain Buddhist temple architecture for noodles and ~10 RMB for water. Pack instant noodles and a thermos — there are free hot water stations

Huizhou old town covered in winter snow at every rest stop. I didn’t. I regretted it.

This is the best part of the mountain. A massive canyon cut into the granite, with a trail that clings to the cliff face. The loop takes 3-4 hours:

  1. Walk DOWN through the canyon (endless stairs, 2h)

  2. Take the “sightseeing train” (actually a funicular, 100) back UP

The funicular is expensive but your knees will thank you.

Overnight on the Mountain

You need to sleep on the mountain for sunrise. Book your hotel months in advance.

| Hotel | Price/Night | Location | Notes |

|-------|------------|----------|-------|

| Beihai Hotel | 600-1,200 | Near Start Peak | Best location for sunrise |

| Shilin Hotel | 500-900 | Near Bright Summit | Cheaper, good location |

| Xihai Hotel | 800-1,500 | Near West Sea Canyon entrance | Most convenient for Day 1-2 transition |

| Yupinglou Hotel | 700-1,200 | Near Welcoming Pine | Good for Day 2 |

| Bunk beds | 150-250/night | Various | Bring earplugs. Shared bathroom |

The bunk bed option is what I did. 200 for a bed in a 6-person room. Not luxury, but you’re only sleeping. Everyone wakes up at 4:30 AM for sunrise anyway.

Day 2: Sunrise & Down the Other Side

Sunrise at Bright Summit (?

Huangshan peak with pine tree and granite

Alarm: 4:30 AM. Leave hotel: 5 AM. Walk to Bright Summit (??the highest point on the mountain at 1,860m. Bring a headlamp. The trail is packed with other guests all shuffling in the dark like zombies.

Sunrise is around 5:30 AM (summer) or 6:30 AM (winter). The park posts times daily. On clear days, the sea of clouds below you and the golden light hitting the peaks is worth every bit of the early wake-up.

Pro tip: Don’t go to the main viewing platform. Walk 5 minutes past it along the trail toward Cloud Valley?there’s a smaller rock outcrop where 10 people can sit instead of 1,000.

Down to Yupinglou & The Welcoming Pine

After sunrise, walk south toward Yupinglou (? where the Welcoming Pine lives. It’s a famous tree. There’s a photo queue. Accept it and take your turn.

Take the Yuping Cable Car Down

90 for the 8-minute descent. Worth it. The walk down is 2.5 hours of stone stairs with no views (you’re inside the forest).

Optional: Visit Hongcun Village

Hongcun ancient village with moon pond reflection

Hongcun is a 900-year-old Huizhou-style village at the foot of the mountain. The iconic photo?moon pond reflecting white-walled houses and mountains?is from the movie Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

It’s a 30-minute bus from the mountain’s foot (15, frequent). I highly recommend spending the afternoon here instead of heading straight home.

Evening: Back to Huangshan City

Take the bus from Hongcun directly to Huangshan North Station (35, 1h) for your train back to Shanghai/Hangzhou.

What to Pack for the Mountain

| Item | Why |

|------|-----|

| Headlamp | 4:30 AM sunrise walk in the dark |

| Instant noodles | 50 vs 10. You do the math |

| Rain jacket | Mountain weather changes in minutes |

| Gloves (Oct-Mar) | The handrails are freezing on the cable cars |

| Knee braces | The downhill steps are brutal |

| Power bank | No charging points on the trail |

| Cash | Some food stalls don’t take WeChat/Alipay |

| Water bottle | Free hot water at rest stops |

##When to Go

| Season | Conditions | Crowds | Verdict |

|--------|-----------|--------|---------|

| Spring (Apr-May) | Cherry blossoms, variable weather | High |?|

| Summer (Jun-Aug) | Green, rainy, HOT | Insane |Avoid if possible |

| Autumn (Sep-Nov) | Clear skies, red leaves, cool temps | High |?Best |

| Winter (Dec-Feb) | Snow, ice on stairs, magic | Low | Need crampons, check if trails are open |

Pro tip: The famous “sea of clouds” phenomenon is most common in October-November. It happens when cool air traps moisture below the peak level. Autumn also offers the lowest probability of rain.

Budget for 2 Days

Stay Connected

Mountain reception is surprisingly goodChina Mobile has antennas at most peaks. But the WiFi in hotels can be slow.

*Huangshan is hard. Your legs will ache for days after. But standing on Bright Summit at 5:35 AM, watching the first light hit a forest of granite peaks floating in clouds?that’s the kind of memory that doesn’t fade.?
