Guilin & Yangshuo: A 3-Day Escape Into China’s Most Beautiful Landscape

Look, I’m gonna be honest with youGuilin is one of those places where the photos don’t do it justice. You see the karst peaks on your phone screen and think “yeah ok, pretty.” Then you actually stand there, on a bamboo raft, with mist rolling over the limestone mountains, and it hits you: this is why people travel.

I spent three days in the Guilin-Yangshuo area last spring and came back with 800 photos, a sunburn, and zero regrets. Here’s how I’d do it again.

Day 1: The Li River Cruise & Arriving in Yangshuo

This is the headline act. The 4-hour cruise from Guilin down to Yangshuo is the classic intro to this region, and for good reason. The entire journey is a slideshow of limestone peaks rising straight out of the water, bamboo groves along the banks, and water buffaloes cooling off in the shallows.

I booked the VIP cabin

Li River with mountain reflection in calm water (楼400 / ~$55) which gets you an upper deck seat with better views and air conditioning when you need a break from the sun. Regular tickets are about 楼300 / ~$42 and perfectly fine too.

Pro tip: Sit on the left side of the boat going downstream — that’s where the best mountains are. And bring snacks, the onboard food is mediocre.

馃浀 Arriving in Yangshuo

When you get off the boat in Yangshuo, you’re immediately surrounded by the karsts. It’s surreal?this small town with noodle shops and souvenir stalls, framed by massive green peaks.

I stayed at a guesthouse called Yangshuo Mountain Nest (楼250/night), about 10 minutes walk from West Street. Clean rooms, friendly owner who helped me rent an e-bike. Book ahead in peak season.

West Street at night is chaos and I loved it. Every other shop sells the same “handmade” scarves and “jade” jewelry, but that’s not the point. The real action is the street food:

Yangshuo Beer Fish (??the local specialty. Fish cooked in a clay pot with beer, tomatoes, and chili. A bit touristy but genuinely good. Try it at Master Chef.

Day 2: Bamboo Rafts & Rice Terraces

This was my favorite thing in the whole trip. Not the big Li River boat?this.

The Yulong River is smaller, quieter, and you ride on a real bamboo raft (well, plastic-wrapped bamboo these days, but close enough) steered by a local with a long pole. The raft sits just inches above the water. No engine noise, just the splash of the pole and birdsong.

There are several sections. I did the Jinlong Bridge to Old County Town stretch (about 90 minutes, 楼150 for two people). You’ll pass through nine small dams where the raft slides down a ramp?gets your heart racing every time.

Pro tip: Go early (8 AM). By 10 AM the tour groups arrive and you’ll be queuing.

馃彅Longji Rice Terraces

This is a half-day trip (at minimum) from Yangshuo. The Longji (Dragon’s Backbone) Rice Terraces are about 2 hours north?absolutely worth the drive.

The terraces were built by the Zhuang and Yao ethnic minorities starting 650 years ago. They cover the mountains like giant staircases, filled with water that reflects the sky. In spring (May-June), the water-filled terraces catch the sunset light. In autumn (September-October), they turn golden with ripe rice.

I visited the Ping’an Village (? section?the most developed, with guesthouses and restaurants at the top. The hike up takes about 40 minutes, or you can take a shuttle for 楼30.

Pro tip: If you’re not fit, take the shuttle UP and walk DOWN. The climb in humid 30掳C weather is no joke. My shirt was completely soaked.

Day 3: Cycling, Caves & The Return

馃毚 Cycle the Countryside

Rent an e-bike and just… go. That’s the plan. Yangshuo county is crisscrossed with tiny roads that wind between karst peaks, through villages, and along rivers. Every turn is a photo op.

I rode from Yangshuo to Xanaxue Village (??about 8 km of paved road through rice paddies with mountains on both sides. Total time: about 30 minutes each way, stopping for photos.

Back in Guilin (Day 3 afternoon), I made a stop at Reed Flute Cave, about 5 km from the city center. It’s a limestone cave filled with stalactites and stalagmites lit up in psychedelic colors?purple, green, blue, red. Very touristy, very Instragrammable.

The cave is 240 million years old. The colored lights are a bit much (I’d prefer natural lighting), but the scale is impressive?some chambers are as tall as a 10-story building.

For my last night, I ate at Old Friend Restaurant (? near the Guilin city center. Order the Guilin rice noodles?they’re the real deal here, nothing like what you get in the US. 楼15 for a bowl with braised pork, peanuts, and pickled beans. Absolute perfection.

Yangshuo is touristyWest Street is a tourist trap. Accept it and enjoy it for what it is. The real magic is outside town.

The food is spicyEven “mild” dishes will have some kick. If you can’t handle chili, say “bu la” when ordering.
Weekends are crazyChinese domestic tourists flood in on Saturdays. Plan your Li River cruise on a weekday if possible.
