This route is a greatest-hits of southern China’s natural beauty. Chongqing for the urban chaos and hotpot, Guilin for the karst mountains that inspired a thousand paintings, Yangshuo for the slow life, and Guangzhou for the food finale.
I’ve done the Chongqing→Guilin leg twice, and each time the landscape shift blows my mind. One minute you’re in a concrete mega-city of 30 million people, the next you’re floating past limestone towers on a bamboo raft. China’s diversity is insane.

Day 1: Chongqing — Mountain City Madness
Theme: Orientation in China’s most chaotic city
Hongya Cave (洪崖洞)
Eleven stories of stilted buildings clinging to a cliff face, lit up at night like something from Spirited Away. It’s become Chongqing’s most Instagrammed spot, and for good reason — the scale is mind-boggling.

Jiefangbei (解放碑)
Chongqing’s Times Square — a massive pedestrian zone surrounded by skyscrapers. The解放碑 monument commemorates China’s victory in the Anti-Japanese War. The surrounding area is great for shopping and people-watching.

Hotpot Dinner
Chongqing hotpot is different from Chengdu — it’s oilier, spicier, more aggressive. The broth is pure red chili oil with Sichuan peppercorns. It’s not for the faint-hearted.
Recommendation: Tangmen Dong (唐门洞) or Xiaolongkan (小龙坎). Order the duck blood, tripe, lotus root, and tofu skin. Budget ¥80–120 / ~$11–17 per person.
Tip: If you can’t handle spice, ask for a “鸳鸯锅” (yuan-yang guo) — a split pot with half spicy, half mild broth.

Day 2: Chongqing — The Real City
Theme: Beyond the tourist spots
Ciqikou Ancient Town (磁器口)
A 1,000-year-old town that’s been absorbed into Chongqing’s urban sprawl. Narrow lanes, traditional tea houses, and the best mahua (twisted dough) in the city. It’s crowded, but the energy is infectious.

Liziba Station (李子坝站)
The metro station where a train passes through a residential building. Yes, through. It’s as absurd and wonderful as it sounds. Stand at the viewing platform below and watch trains emerge from the 6th floor of an apartment block.

Chongqing People’s Liberation Monument & Underground City
Chongqing has an underground city built during World War II as an air raid shelter. It’s been converted into a commercial underground street. Strange and fascinating.
Evening: Night Market at Nanbin Road
Chongqing’s riverside nightlife. Hotpot restaurants, BBQ stalls, and craft beer bars line the Jialing River. The view of Hongya Cave from across the river at night is spectacular.

Reed Flute Cave (芦笛岩)
A 240-meter-long limestone cave filled with stalactites and stalagmites illuminated by colored lights. It’s kitschy and beautiful — like walking through a crystal palace. The formations have names like “Crystal Palace” and “Pine Tree in the Snow.”

Elephant Trunk Hill (象鼻山)
Guilin’s most famous landmark — a hill that looks exactly like an elephant drinking from the Li River. The “trunk” is a natural arch in the limestone. It’s on the 20 yuan banknote.

Day 4: Guilin → Yangshuo — The Li River Journey
Theme: China’s most famous river cruise
Li River Cruise (漓江漂流)
The 83km cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo is one of China’s most iconic experiences. Limestone karst peaks line both banks, water buffalo graze on the shores, and fishermen on bamboo rafts drift past. It’s been the subject of Chinese landscape painting for over a thousand years.

Tip: Sit on the right side (starboard) for the best views. Bring snacks — the boats don’t serve food.
Alternative: Take a bamboo raft (¥100–150 / ~$14–21) for a more intimate experience. Smaller, quieter, closer to the water. Note: bamboo rafts are only for 2 people.
Yangshuo West Street (西街)
A 1,400-year-old street turned backpacker haven. Cafés, bars, massage shops, and local crafts. It’s touristy but the setting — surrounded by karst peaks — makes it unique.

A spectacular outdoor light show directed by Zhang Yimou, performed on the Li River itself. 600 performers, the river as a stage, mountains as a backdrop. The scale is breathtaking.

Day 5: Yangshuo — Cycling Through Paradise
Theme: The best cycling day of your life
Yulong River (遇龙河)
Rent a bike (¥30–50 / ~$4–7 per day) and ride along the Yulong River. The road follows the river through rice paddies, past water buffalo, under stone arch bridges, with karst peaks rising on every side. This is the China that postcards try to capture.
Route: Yangshuo → Yulong Bridge → Jiuxian Village → Moon Hill → back. ~25km round trip, easy pace.
Moon Hill (月亮山)
A natural limestone arch in the shape of a crescent moon, visible from the cycling path. You can climb to the top (¥15 / ~$2 entry) for panoramic views.
Xingping Ancient Town (兴坪古镇)
A 1,000-year-old town at the convergence of the Li River and Yulong River. The 20 Yuan Banknote Viewpoint is here — the exact spot depicted on the back of the 20 yuan note. The view is identical to the photo, which is rare and satisfying.

Evening: BBQ and Beer in Yangshuo
Grab a table at an outdoor BBQ stall on West Street. Grilled chicken wings, lamb skewers, corn on the cob, and a cold Lijiang Beer. The karst peaks are silhouetted against the sunset. Perfect end to a perfect day.
Day 6: Yangshuo → Guangzhou — City Finale

Masterpiece of Cantonese architecture. Every surface covered in intricate carvings. The scale and detail are extraordinary.

Walk the colonial concession island — Victorian, Baroque, and Neoclassical buildings. A peaceful contrast to the city’s energy.
Guangzhou Tower & Pearl River Night
End your trip with a walk along the Pearl River. The Canton Tower (广州塔) lights up in rainbow colors, and the skyline is spectacular. If you want to go up, the observation deck is ¥150 / ~$21.

Day 7: Guangzhou — Dim Sum & Departure
Theme: The food capital’s farewell
Dim Sum Morning
Go to Tao Tao Ju (陶陶居), operating since 1880. This is where Cantonese dim sum was perfected. Order everything — har gow, siu mai, char siu bao, cheung fun, egg tarts. Budget ¥60–100 / ~$8–14.
Beijing Road (北京路)
Last-minute shopping and the ancient road layers under glass panels.
Departure
Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport is one of China’s busiest — flights everywhere. Or take the high-speed rail to Shenzhen (30 min) or Hong Kong (2 hours).

💡 Practical Tips
- Chongqing navigation — The city is built on mountains. GPS can’t tell if you’re on the 1st floor or 5th floor. Trust your eyes, not the map.
- Li River cruise — Book in advance during peak season. The morning cruise has better light for photos.
- Yangshuo cycling — Electric bikes are available if you don’t want to pedal. ¥50–80 / ~$7–11 per day.
- Guilin rice noodles — Eat them for breakfast. The locals do. Every stall has a different broth — try several.
- Beer fish — Yangshuo’s signature dish. Fresh river fish cooked in beer. Every restaurant on West Street serves it.
- Bamboo raft vs. cruise — Raft is more intimate but less comfortable. Cruise has better food and more stable views. Choose based on your style.
- Impression Liu Sanjie — Book tickets in advance. Shows sell out during peak season.
