Everyone goes to Chengdu for the pandas. Fair enough — they’re adorable. But if you stop there, you’re missing the best part of Sichuan. The real magic is 3 hours south at the Leshan Giant Buddha, and 8 hours north in the otherworldly valleys of Jiuzhaigou.
I grew up hearing about Jiuzhaigou from my grandparents — they called it “a place that doesn’t belong to this world.” After going there myself, I get it. The water is so blue it looks photoshopped. It isn’t.

Best Season to Visit
- Autumn (October–November) — Jiuzhaigou’s peak season. The fall foliage reflected in the blue water is breathtaking
- Spring (April–May) — Waterfalls at full flow, fewer crowds
- Summer (June–August) — Hot in Chengdu (35°C+), but Jiuzhaigou is cool and pleasant
- Avoid: December–March — Jiuzhaigou gets cold and some trails close

Day 1: Chengdu — Pandas & Hotpot
Theme: Arrive, eat, repeat
Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding
Get there at 8:00 AM opening. By 10 AM, the pandas go inside to nap and you’ve missed the best action. Early morning is when they’re active — climbing trees, eating bamboo, tumbling over each other. The baby pandas (if any are there) will make you question every life decision that didn’t involve pandas.

My advice: The main path splits left and right. Go RIGHT first — the adult panda enclosures are less crowded. Come back to the left side for the nursery and sub-adult areas.
Jinli Ancient Street (锦里)
Afternoon wander through this restored Qing Dynasty street. It’s touristy but photogenic — red lanterns, traditional architecture, tea houses. Grab a bowl of dan dan noodles (担担面) from a street vendor for ¥12.

Hotpot Dinner
Chengdu hotpot is an experience. Sichuan peppercorns, dried chilies, beef tallow — it’s numbing, spicy, and absolutely incredible. Xiaolongkan (小龙坎) or Shu Daxia (蜀大侠) are both reliable chains.
Budget ¥80–120 / ~$11–17 per person. Order the duck blood, beef triptych, and lotus root. Dip everything in sesame oil to cool down your mouth.

Day 2: Chengdu — Tea Houses & Local Life
Theme: Slow living, Sichuan style
People’s Park (人民公园)
This is where old Chengdu lives. Tea houses line the lotus pond, retirees play mahjong, couples dance under the trees. Sit down at Heming Tea House (鹤鸣茶社), order a bowl of jasmine tea (¥15–30), and just… exist. I spent 3 hours here on my first visit and didn’t regret a minute.

Kuanzhai Alley (宽窄巷子)
Three parallel alleys — Wide, Narrow, and Well-narrow. It’s been renovated into a tourist zone, but the architecture is authentic Qing Dynasty. Good for photos, snacks, and people-watching.
Sichuan Opera (Chuanju)
If you can get tickets, see a Sichuan Opera performance. The face-changing act (变脸) is mind-blowing — performers change masks in the blink of an eye, and nobody can figure out how. Shufeng Yayun (蜀风雅韵) theater, ¥150–280 / ~$21–39.
Evening: Chengdu Craft Beer Scene
Chengdu has a surprisingly good craft beer scene. The Beer Lady (啤酒阿姨) on Yulin Road has 500+ beers from around the world. Perfect after a spicy hotpot night.
Day 3: Chengdu → Leshan Giant Buddha

Leshan Giant Buddha (乐山大佛)
Carved into a cliff face in 803 AD, this 71-meter Buddha is the largest stone Buddha in the world. Standing at its feet and looking up is genuinely awe-inspiring. The engineering required to carve this in the 8th century — without modern tools — is mind-boggling.
There are two ways to experience it:
- Walk down the cliff path — Gets you up close but involves 399 steep steps (and you have to climb them all back up)
- Take the boat — ¥70 / ~$10 round trip. Gives you the full frontal view from the river. Less tiring but you miss the detail
I did both. If you only pick one, do the boat — the full-face view is more photogenic.

Lingyun Temple
At the top of the cliff path, there’s a temple complex. Less crowded than the Buddha itself, with great views of the Minjiang and Dadu rivers converging.
Evening: Return to Chengdu
Train back takes 1 hour. Dinner in Chengdu — try mapo tofu (麻婆豆腐) at Chen Mapo Tofu (陈麻婆豆腐), the original restaurant. ¥15–25 / ~$2–3.50.
Day 4: Chengdu → Jiuzhaigou
Theme: Into the mountains
Getting to Jiuzhaigou
Two options:
- Fly to Jiuhuang Airport (九黄机场) — 45 minutes from Chengdu, ¥800–1500 / ~$110–207 one way. Then 1.5-hour bus to park entrance
- Bus from Chengdu — 8–10 hours, ¥150–200 / ~$21–28. Scenic but exhausting
I flew. Life’s short. The flight itself is spectacular — you fly right over the mountains.
⚠️ Altitude warning: Jiuzhaigou is at 2,000–3,100m elevation. If you’re coming from sea level, you might feel mild altitude symptoms (headache, shortness of breath). Stay hydrated, take it easy on Day 4.
Check in at Jiuzhaigou Town
The town outside the park (漳扎镇) has dozens of hotels and guesthouses. Stay here — it’s the only practical option. Book in advance during peak season (October).
Evening: Rest & Prepare
You’ll need an early start tomorrow. Buy snacks and water tonight — prices inside the park are double.

Day 5: Jiuzhaigou — The Blue Dream (Part 1)
Theme: The valleys and lakes
The Park
Jiuzhaigou is shaped like a Y. The main valleys are:
- Zechariah Valley (则查洼沟) — longest, has the famous Long Lake and Five Flower Lake
- Rize Valley (日则沟) — most scenic, waterfalls and mirror-like lakes
- Shuzheng Valley (树正沟) — entrance valley, waterfalls and village scenery
Start with Rize Valley (right branch). Take the park bus to the top (Nuorilang Station) and work your way down. This is the classic route and gives you the best photos.
Must-See Stops
Five Flower Lake (五花湖) — The star of Jiuzhaigou. Water so clear and colorful it looks like a painting. The lakebed is covered in fallen tree trunks and calcium deposits that create the blue-green-gold patterns. This is the spot for the iconic Jiuzhaigou photo.
Pearl Shoal Waterfall (珍珠滩瀑布) — Wide, shallow water cascading over a limestone滩. It’s where the opening scene of Journey to the West was filmed. Yes, that famous waterfall is here.
Mirror Lake (镜海) — On a still morning, the reflection is so perfect you can’t tell which way is up. Visit before 10 AM when the wind picks up.

Tip: Bring a rain jacket. Jiuzhaigou weather changes fast. I got caught in a downpour at 11 AM, sunburn at 2 PM, and fog by 4 PM.
Day 6: Jiuzhaigou — The Blue Dream (Part 2)
Theme: Waterfalls, villages, and hidden corners
Shuzheng Valley (树正沟)
Today explore the entrance valley. Shuzheng Waterfall (树正瀑布) and Shuzheng Lakes (树正群海) are stunning — a series of 19 small lakes cascading down like a staircase. The Tibetan villages nestled between the lakes add a human element that the upper valleys lack.
Nuorilang Grassland
In summer, the grassland blooms with wildflowers. It’s a nice break from the lakes and waterfalls — just open meadow with mountains on all sides.
Tibetan Culture
Jiuzhaigou is home to Tibetan and Qiang communities. If you’re lucky, you might stumble upon a village festival or prayer flag ceremony. Respect local customs — don’t touch prayer flags, don’t point at religious symbols, and always walk clockwise around mani stone piles.
Evening: Last Night Near Jiuzhaigou
Dinner at a Tibetan restaurant in Zhangzha Town. Try ** yak butter tea** (酥油茶) — it’s an acquired taste, but you’re in Tibet-adjacent territory, so embrace it.
Day 7: Jiuzhaigou → Chengdu → Departure
Theme: Long journey home
Early Morning: Last Walk
If you have time before your transport, take a short walk along the Zhangzha River. The water is milky blue from glacial runoff — even outside the park, Jiuzhaigou’s beauty spills over.
Return to Chengdu
- Flight: Jiuhuang Airport → Chengdu, 45 minutes. Book early — flights can fill up
- Bus: 8–10 hours, not recommended for Day 7 if you have evening commitments
If You Have Time in Chengdu
Head to Yulin Road (玉林路) for a final meal. This neighborhood is where the song “Chengdu” (成都 by Zhao Lei) was written. Find a small restaurant, order some串串 (skewers), and raise a glass to one of the best weeks of your life.

💡 Practical Tips
- Altitude sickness — Jiuzhaigou ranges from 2,000–3,100m. Bring ibuprofen, stay hydrated, don’t overexert yourself on Day 4.
- Weather in Jiuzhaigou — Bring layers. Temperature can swing 15°C in a single day. Rain gear is essential.
- Book Jiuzhaigou tickets online — The park has a daily visitor cap. Book at least 3 days in advance at www.jiuzhai.com.
- Don’t feed the fish — Jiuzhaigou’s fish are protected. ¥500 fine if caught feeding them.
- Photography tips — Polarizing filter for the lakes. Overcast days actually give better water color than sunny days (less glare).
- Pack snacks for inside the park — Food inside is expensive and limited. Bring bread, fruit, and water.
