Chengdu: A Local’s Guide to the Land of Pandas & Hotpot

July 2026 | Food lovers & culture seekers who want the real Chengdu | 3 Days

Chengdu is the city that Instagram doesn’t do justice to. Sure, you’ve seen the panda photos. But nobody tells you about the 6 PM transformation?when the city spills onto the sidewalks, hundreds of wok stations fire up, and the air turns into chili oil and Sichuan pepper.

?(locals’ time). I spent enough time here to separate the tourist traps from the real deal. Here’s the unfiltered version.

馃惣 Area 1: Around the Panda Base (North)

Giant panda eating bamboo at Chengdu Panda Base

Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding

This is the main event. Get here AT 7:30 AM?not 9, not 10. The pandas are most active in the morning when it’s cool. By 10 AM, they’re all asleep in the shade like overfed cats.

The base is huge?100+ pandas across multiple enclosures. The cubs are in the Moon Delivery Room. The red pandas (small ones, actually raccoon-like) are near the exit and twice as entertaining.

  • 馃搷 1375 Xiongmao Avenue, Northern Suburb

  • 馃殗 Metro Line 3, Panda Avenue Station, then free shuttle

-?7:30 AM?5:30 PM (get there AT opening)

  • 馃挵 楼55 (~$8)

Things They Don’t Tell You

  • The panda souvenirs at the base gift shop are marked up 300%. Buy from the street vendors outside.

  • Bring your own water. Inside it’s 楼8 for a bottle.

  • Photography is fine. Selfie sticks are banned.

馃彌Area 2: City Center Classics

Kuanzhai Alley

The most famous pedestrian street in Chengdu. Kuanzhai = Wide and Narrow. Three parallel alleysWide Alley, Narrow Alley, and Well Alley. Tourist hell in the daytime, actually pleasant at night.

Go at 9 PM after the tour groups leave. Grab a seat at one of the outdoor tea houses, order a pot of jasmine tea (楼30), and watch the locals play mahjong. This is the Chengdu vibe.

  • 馃搷 Qingyang District

  • 馃殗 Metro Line 4, Kuanzhai Alley Station

-?24/7 (shops 10 AM?10 PM)

  • 馃挵 Free entry

Jinli Ancient Street

Jinli is attached to Wuhou Temple and is basically Kuanzhai’s more chaotic cousin. Narrower, louder, more street food. Skip the “antique” shops (they’re all mass-produced). Eat:

  • 馃 Dan Dan Noodles (??spicy minced pork on noodles. 楼15

  • 馃 Zhong Dumplings (??dumplings in chili oil and garlic. 楼12

  • 馃崱 Three-Pound Balls (??glutinous rice balls with peanut powder. 楼8

Wuhou Memorial Temple (?

Dedicated to Zhuge Liang, the military strategist from the Three Kingdoms period. The red walls, ancient cypress trees, and stone tablets are genuinely atmospheric. The murals inside tell the story of the Three Kingdoms with surprising drama.

Come at 4 PM, spend 90 minutes, then exit into Jinli as it gets dark?both are connected.

  • 馃搷 231 Wuhou Temple Street

  • 馃殗 Metro Line 3/5, Gaoshengqiao Station

-?8:00 AM?6:30 PM

  • 馃挵 楼50 (~$7)

馃尦 Area 3: The Slow Life

People’s Park

Local tea house in People's Park with bamboo chairs

This is where Chengdu’s soul lives. Old men playing cards under pagodas, couples dancing in the square (yes, the synchronized ballroom dancing), and the famous ** Heming Teahouse **?operating since 1923.

Get a seat by the lake, order 楼20 jasmine tea, and do nothing for 2 hours. The waiter will keep refilling your thermos for free. This isn’t a tourist activity?it’s how Chengdu people actually live.

  • 馃搷 12 Shaocheng Road

  • 馃殗 Metro Line 2, People’s Park Station

-Park: 24h. Teahouse: 6:30 AM?10 PM

  • 馃挵 Free

East Suburb Memory

A former communist-era factory turned into an arts district. Red-brick buildings, graffiti walls, indie cafes, and the occasional live music. Way less crowded than Beijing’s 798. Good for an afternoon wander and Instagram shots.

  • 馃搷 4.5 km east of city center

  • 馃殗 Metro Line 8, Dongjiao Memory Station

-?24/7

  • 馃挵 Free

馃彅Area 4: Day Trips from Chengdu

Leshan Giant Buddha

Leshan Giant Buddha carved into the cliff face

A 71-meter-tall Buddha carved into a cliff. It took 90 years to build (713-803 AD). When you’re standing at its feet looking up, your brain struggles to process the scale. This is one of those rare places that’s more impressive than the photos.

Two ways to see it:

  1. Walk down the stairwayYou go from the top (head level) down to the feet. The queue can be 2 hours on weekends. Go at 8 AM.

  2. Boat cruiseYou see the full Buddha from the river. 楼70, 30 minutes. No queue, better photo.

High-speed train from Chengdu East: 1 hour, 楼54.

Emei Mountain temple architecture with clouds

Mount Emei

One of the Four Sacred Buddhist Mountains of China. If you’re a serious hiker, the 2-day summit trek is incredible. If you’re normal, take the cable car up and hike down 2 hours. The temple at the top still has monks, incense smoke, and clouds at your feet.

Train from Chengdu: 1.5 hours.

馃尪Chengdu FoodWhat to Actually Eat

Hotpot

You can’t leave without doing hotpot. Go to a local chain like Huang Chen Huang or Xiao Long Kan (. Don’t order the set menu?pick your own ingredients:

| Goose intestine | | Crunchy. Local favorite |

| Lotus root | | Absorbs the broth beautifully |

馃彊Area 5: Night Scene

Chengdu’s shopping heart. Chunxi Road is the old street (locals shop here). Taikoo Li is the open-air luxury mall next door (beautiful architecture, rooftop bars, 楼80 cocktails).

One Last Thing

Don’t over-plan Chengdu. Seriously. The best experiences here are the unplanned ones?the tiny hotpot place your taxi driver recommends, the old man teaching you mahjong in the park, the random tea house where you end up spending 3 hours. Leave room for serendipity.
